Weetopia

Weetopia is a concept to establish a circular economy on a small scale in urban areas.

It could resemble a small ecosystem where waste is collected and classified, and part of it is composted and reused as soil and fertiliser for the lanes’ green space.

Weetopia is a combination of the Scottish “wee” for small and “utopia” for an ideal place. The small, ideal space with environmental-friendly functions in the lanes could benefit residents and visitors alike.

At the heart of the new lane design are containers of various sizes, which can be used for both business waste collection and temporary food markets and events. The colours of the waste bins could guide recycling and increase sustainability awareness.

The bins also provide improved lighting for security at night. To make waste collection more efficient, the containers’ lights will also signal when they are almost full.

WHY?

With Glasgow’s high population density in the city centre, there is an increasing trash and waste problem in its lanes. Thus, the Weetopia project aims to find a feasible and practical way to improve the lanes in Glasgow’s city centre.

As the City Council is making plans to improve cycling ways and art spaces in Glasgow, Weetopia could expand on these plans.
